What is so bad about proboards? Maybe I don't see the issues because I am not a tech guy. I think it's fine. I also don't give a shit about losing the 30 content. That being said, we definitely cannot move permanently to a ghost town so my offer to pay some $$$ if necessary still stands.

What's bad is it's still a free board so they have no accountability for keeping their service up. The board software doesn't allow addons or much customization besides colors. We should be moving forwards and this place is moving sideways and just a little bit up since they use distributed server loads. If board admin does not have access to a database then it's a bad move in my opinion.

I think we discussed the proper alternative on the .30 (cannot recall the specific site, but it looked great). But nothing happens and I am sick of repeating myself. Let's just move on somehow.

Some Add-ons are easy -- I added about 6, including the Shoutbox, Twitter, PM notifications etc.
However, the basic functionality is pretty limited and can't be changed -- no embedding, apart from youtube, and limited admin functions for example. Can't beat free though. Ideally we'd be in vBB or phBB or the third one I can't remember.

This is a new thread to talk about new board options. I may repost my own posts here on the .30 as well, as we should all move together, ideally with 1780s on board.

1780s is not going to move. The idea of moving with him means not moving at all.

I visit quite a few forums during the day, some with lotsa traffic, some with little. I don't post on all of them, but I do read them all. I took a look at what board software they were running: vBulletin www.vbulletin.com/1. www.avforums.com/ (NOTE: They are using a custom designed version of vBB recoded by the original author of vBB who now is at Xenforo. They also have code to detect adblocking software -- it's the only forum I use that I don't adblock, which may be relevant if we want to part fund the forum from ads). 2. forums.overclockers.com.au/ vBB 3.8.4 3. * Private board * vBB 3.8.1 $195 - $285 Invision Power Board www.invisionpower.com/products/board/1. mahalo.30.forumer.com 2. * Private board * 3. * Private board * Self-hosted from $175, or from $10/month with an IPS Hosted Community. phpBB www.phpbb.com/1. chrismoyles.net/phpBB3/2. sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/nzbget/phpBB® is free and open source software released under the GNU General Public License v2.Simple Machines Forum www.simplemachines.org/about/smf/license.php1. lime-technology.com/forum SMF 2.0.2 $0 (Free) ThoughtsI was surprised how many boards were running IPB (the forum software on the .30 -- because it's skinned differently at other boards, I thought it was different software. I wonder if Forumer have customised it heavily? No-one is running Xenforo. vBB or IPB seem to be the easiest and safest choices, but also require spending a decent amount of cash for the s/w. phBB makes sense if we want free s/w (still need to pay for hosting).

The IPB run at Forumer was based on a very old version of IPB. Like the amateurs that they were, they settled on a platform, heavily customized it, and then somehow lost the programming staff or will to continue to combine their code base with new versions of IPB.

vBulletin is a bit of a blue chip choice in forum software, because you can get a lot of support if needed, including professional support.
There is absolutely no need for the CMS and blog stuff in the premium version, so it's "only" $195 to get started there. The occasional upgrade fee is a good idea. The Cellar is still on an older version, partly because it also needs a hardware upgrade to run the latest and greatest. vBulletin is responsible about security upgrades for the previous version.
There are many $10 month hosting plans that can get it done, with a decent administrator at hand. (I am one such administrator, just sayin') I use namecheap.com for domain name services and they do hosting, and I believe the $5.95/month plan gets it done. Although every plan can run into its limitations... some of which we might not see at first...

Maybe a few hundred users on at peak times. Do you think we could get away with a cheapo hosting plan?
