The only question to pose is: will it be readily, easily, and always available? I personally don't understand why y'all need the bells and whistles - give me something that works when I click it and that I can terrorize others and make myself laugh and I'm good.

Looking at these stats, it doesn't seem like the board ever has that much in the way of peak load? Maybe a few hundred users on at peak times. Do you think we could get away with a cheapo hosting plan? Well Namecheap, for one, let you see its max allotment, which is like TACS could certainly run on that, but they say this is only for peaks; the real limitation is in their TOS, which says www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/157/22/do-you-have-any-server-resource-restrictionsThey have put a lot of thought into it... such that the actual question is now incomprehensible. vBulletin doesn't use cron, for example, to manage its hourly/daily/weekly events. But it kicks off some fairly big things from time to time. Things that could work when the system starts, might STOP working once it's been around a while. When Google and Yahoo come to index your site they will often take all of it. "Unlimited" plans then start to creak at their limits and you get errors and half-formed pages.

*phew*
So the $77.80/year "unlimited" Shared Hosting Plan might turn out to be a much worse deal than the $290.04/year Basic Business Hosting Plan which gives you 1000GB Bandwidth/month. TACMB bandwidth could be about 5GB/day, after a while so it would have plenty of room to grow.
In theory, Google ads and a tip jar could cover it nicely... BUT somebody has to administer accounting to get that done... Paypal accounts and banks and whatnot.

didn't tardbasket move a bunch of topics to another phpbb forum or something? he posted it in the secret forum on the 30 Yes. It's detailed more over on the other board, but the summary is I wrote a crawler for forumer that creates insert statements for phpbb. Estimated runtime for a full board run is 48 hours based on small scale runs. Goddamn forumer is so slow. If it had the same response time as this board it might run in 4 hours.

There are some practical legal issues that must be taken into account when deciding who will handle the accounting (paying for software, taking in income from google, etc.). I am assuming that 1780s, whoever and wherever he is, is the owner of the domain name carollaboards.com and is the owner of whatever income is derived from the google ads on the board. That means that if someone wanted to sue for damages arising out any content posted on the board (and I realize that forumer and 1780s would have CDA immunity so long as they did not create the content at issue, but there are ways around that that can make a forum owner miserable - trust me I know because I have done it), forumer and the board would get named, a subpoena would be served on the private registration company and 1780s' (or his company's) identity would be revealed and he would now be a defendant in a lawsuit. Same goes for undertoad at his forum.
I would rather not have to deal with those issues, otherwise I would spring for the whole thing. Of course, if the forum owner were offshore (England perhaps?) that would go a long way toward avoiding those issue.
Anyway, just something to keep in mind.

That'll be a risk no matter who runs the board.

I'm not suggesting anything. I just wanted to put that out there in case anyone was going to step up in place of 1780s. And while you may have considered it, others may not have.

Gotcha
I'm waiting for 1780's guy to get back to me. Ideally for me he would still be the great Oz, but have one other person step up for dual admin role, maybe neilt0. We just need someone able to log in at any hour of the day and deal with all the splosers/hack scripts and other shit like we had a few weeks ago at the main board, and work on customizations. Also in my ideal world I would have admin rights to help with set up and data importing. I have no interest in being a mod/admin and would want my rights removed once everything's running smooth.
We have enough people confirmed to throw a few bucks in: tardbasket, btaylor, backsack Maybe we just split the initial investment for whatever software license and hosting we go with, throwing the $$ in a paypal for 1780s.
Now the difficult part is pulling the trigger and getting 1780 to pull it.
Software-wise I don't care what we use, just consider if it's not phpbb it will take more time for me to analyze how to get all our data in it.

We can't easily determine that because the owner has whois privacy turned on.
The domain carollaboards.com has basically no control over the usage of the forum. See 1780s - or whomever - did not make carollaboards.com canonical for the forum. The forum is at .30 and all of Google's indexing is on .30. carollaboards.com is a simple redirect and nobody knows that domain name. It's irrelevant!
This is why the forum CAN move without 1780s. Make another name the "real" domain name for the forum and it will be much more useful for people and eventually rocket past .30 in Google.
I have always assumed that was Forumer and that is how they keep their beaks damp.

Also, I agree... having the forum owner be in the UK would be an awesome legal hole to shoot everyone through!
I've never had a problem with this in 21 years, beyond the occasional DMCA takedown/legalish email on Cellar Image of the Day. (We deserve that, because we often blatantly steal copyrighted pics to create our own content.)

So wait a minute. This has really turned into, "We're stealing the .30 hook, line and sinker from 1780s?
Have I misunderstood? Because I am definitely not down with that.

I do not really get the allegiance. It is not like he has been on top of things. He has constantly ignored many queries about the board, and changing how things are. Am I missing his posts where he shows he is paying attention - other then being called out by Undertoad, and taking a week to mention he is working on something? Seems like we all were quite patient for many months.
