I like podcasting, but I do tend to think there is a glut of podcasts. Even the ones that I like I tend to burn out on because both the host's and guests seem to run out of stories. If you look at Stern's success (pre sat), he did a four to five hour show everyday. But I think his clever trick was assembling a cast and crew around him that he could use for material. So yes, while Stern's ego was always present, he was smart enough to be more of a "ring master" and use his staff for material. I used to LOVE the Stern show in the 90's. I remember the show being so damn funny that I would be late for work because I was sitting in my car laughing.
So, I guess I'm saying..I would like to see a sea change. Certainly less quantity and more quality. Frankly, if Stern had his old crew back, Jackie, John, etc (yes unrealistic and won't happen) and it was a podcast, I would consider paying for it. (this is fantasy). The reality is, Stern lost his fire, and now I'm left with...good..but certainly nowhere near as engaging, podcasts.
WTF - the popularity of this show befuddles me. It's navel gazing at it's worst. I could care less about the inner workings of Marc Maron. (sp).
Nerdist - above average - but sometimes suffers from a cute self referential annoying quality.
Hollywood Babble On - Not bad, but would benefit greatly from having guests. And if I have to listen to another crappy David Bowie impression/song I will start killing ants.
Jim & Eddie Talk Shit - I do enjoy this one, but haven't listened to it for very long.
You Had to be there - One of my favorites, and I have a minor technical complaint about it, they record with incredibly low levels, so you have to crank it. But, because it's only once a week, you tend to get better stories, and more engaged guests. FYI - if you are looking for actual funny female podcasters, try these two out.
The Apple Sisters - I liked some of these, and I applaud the creativity. BUT, I kinda quit listening to it because the schtick grew old.
Comedy Bang Bang - I am split down the middle on this. Scott can be a horribly annoying host. And the overly long musical bits are not funny. Just painful. He does get good guests. I wish he would learn to shut up and let the comedy flow a little more. They get some good improvisors on and I feel like he HAS to interject his 'whatever'. Some dudes cannot help but pull out their comedy wang. Painful.
Joe Rogan - I like this sometimes, other times I only make it about 15 minutes in and kill it. Brian Redban is a piece of shit.
Jay Mohr - only gave it a few listens. Seemed generally ok?
Katie Morgan - started listening to this from Kevin Smith's show. But man, somehow she manages to make sex unsexy. It's a mystery. And one day, her co-host Cassie Young just disappeared, and they never said ANYTHING about it. Generally Cassie was the more "engaging" of the two of them. So you are left with the kinda unpleasant one
I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that spring to mind.
